Published on October 8, 2004
Under regulations issued in March, 2003, the Railroad Commission of Texas is requiring
that all Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) contaminated equipment be
identified and tagged by March, 2005.
Rule 4.605 of the Texas Administrative Code “Identification of Equipment Contaminated
with NORM” requires that:
"Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, within two years of the effective date
of this rule, each person who owns or operates equipment used for production or disposal
including each person who owns or operates equipment associated with a commercial
facility, as defined in §3.78 (relating to Fees, Performance Bonds, and Alternative Forms
of Financial Security Required to be Filed), shall identify NORM-contaminated equipment
with the letters "NORM" by securely attaching a clearly visible, waterproof tag or marking
with a legible waterproof paint or ink."
